Chapter Eleven
Jared departed to more pressing work, saying heâd think on it some more once we explained why his good news had received such a poor reception. Nibble took possession of my lap, getting double the treats as both Sian and I tried to throw off our shared mood.
âThis is hopeless,â she exclaimed, waving my hands in the air. âIf my body was easy to find, somebody wouldâve stumbled across it by now.â
Petunia lowered her gaze to the floor, which I took as a sign of agreement.
âAnd I donât know why youâre still skulking about here,â Sian continued. âIf you hadnât provided the ingredients, I never wouldâve performed the spell and we wouldnât be in this mess!â
âSteady on,â I interjected. âThatâs quite a reach.â
âIs it? I told you we shouldnât let an elf get involved, but you convinced me against my better judgement. Once we believe our head canât beââ
âMy head.â
âOur head for the time being.â She paused, rubbing my temple. âWhere was I?â
âYou were blaming someone who tried to help you.â
âYes! Next thing you know, Jaredâll be back here trying to sell us some made-up potion at grossly inflated prices. Thatâs just how they work.â
I knew Petuniaâs glare was directed at Sian but since I co-occupied the same space, it felt a little personal.
âIâm sure she didnât meanââ
âOh, she did,â Petunia said at the same time Sian said, âI did.â
âPerhaps donât alienate the only person who can help us.â
But my warning came too late. The elf was halfway to the footpath by the time I shoved Sian aside to chase after her and my entreaties fell on large, deaf ears.
I was fuming, but the witch appeared oblivious. âYou should get to work,â she said, brightening as she issued the order. âMoping around here all day wonât get us anywhere. Thereâs a tincture to be made and an appointment to be kept.â
In all the excitement, Iâd forgotten about our meeting to clear up my employment history. It felt unimportant now, but it wasnât like there was anything else on my calendar. I trudged back inside to let Sian get on with the recipe.
There was no magic to cast, so once the liquid was poured into a bottle from Sianâs old stash, we headed out the door. Like most places in Dewsbury Down, our appointment was within walking distance and, soon enough, I was knocking on the manâs front door.
âWow,â Sian said as her contact stepped outside.
She wasnât wrong. Warren Moresby, a man sheâd described as being âsomewhat of a computer geekâ looked more like heâd stepped out of a survival show. The kind where heâd fight a bear in the morning, rescue wild animals in the afternoon, and cook up some freshly hunted game for dinner with a side salad of foraged greens and a homemade vinaigrette.
âLook at you,â she continued, giving a low whistle of approval. âDamn boy, but you grew up fine.â
Warren rubbed the back of his neck then pushed all his hair forward. The thick strands fell back into place except for one rebellious curl that stood at right angles above his left ear.
